The Golden State Warriors are reportedly planning to search for a trade partner for Andrew Wiggins "right up to the deadline" on Thursday.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported the Warriors are looking to get out from under Wiggins' four-year, $109 million contract.
Wiggins is in the midst of his worst professional season. He's averaging a career-low 12.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting just 31.1 percent from three-point range. Warriors coach Steve Kerr played Wiggins just 19 minutes in Saturday's overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks, and he sat out Monday's game against the Brooklyn Nets with ankle soreness.
The Warriors will have trouble finding a taker for Wiggins, who has failed to live up to his talent since being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. While he emerged as a high-end 3-and-D player in Golden State, he's taken a marked step back this season and noticeably lacks confidence on the floor.
Golden State would likely have to attach draft-pick compensation to Wiggins to unload his contract, which may make it a non-starter for the front office.
It may be better to hold onto Wiggins and hope he turns things around. He started to show signs of life late in January with back-to-back 20-point games against the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers.
